Basically, High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) is the good cholesterol, and Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C) is the bad, although we need both. Guidelines are there to pick up high-risk patients and get them on statins. They measure both but add them up! So you could have a lot of good cholesterol and minimal bad cholesterol and still be 'above target' and be put on statins! GPs do not know this.


HDL-C is good as it goes around and cleans the plaque from the arteries, while LDL-C goes around and patches up damaged arteries with cholesterol, repairing them.
